At least seven people lost their lives and nearly 700 people were injured following a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 hits Taiwan on Wednesday (April 3) morning.
The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings that extended to Japan and the Philippines before being lifted.
The quake was the strongest to shake the island in the last 25 years.
The earthquake shook buildings off their foundations and caused landslides in the eastern part of the island. Several buildings in the eastern city of Hualien also collapsed.
Taiwan’s government said that 711 people were injured in the earthquake and that 77 people were trapped.
According to Aljazeera, Taiwanese fire safety officials said at least seven people were killed in Hualien County, including three hikers struck by falling rocks.
Rescue teams were working to rescue 77 people believed to be trapped in rubble or needing rescue.
The Taiwanese fire safety agency said that at least 1,103 earthquake-related incidents were reported in various counties and cities across the island.
Meanwhile, several aftershocks were felt in the capital city following the strong earthquake.As per Taiwanese authorities, aftershocks could continue for the next three to four days due to the earthquake’s intensity.
